The North East's only specialist art school
Who we are and how The Northern School of Art is governed.
The Northern School of Art has provided specialist art and design education in the North East for over 100 years, formed in 1979 by the merger of Teesside College of Art and Hartlepool College of Art.
The School retained its Gold award in the Teaching Excellence Framework in 2023 and received a third consecutive Outstanding Ofsted rating in 2025, one of only a handful of institutions to hold both.
The School is one of only two remaining specialist art and design institutions in the further education sector in the UK, and the only specialist provider of art and design education in the North East.
